They are a great way to get rid of foods without them smelling up your home and trash can. But did you know that there is a proper way to use your garbage disposal? Most think that any foods can go down the disposal as long as you leave it on long enough to chop it all up. Sadly, this is not the case at all. There are actually foods that are safe and good for your disposal, while there are others that you should not put near the disposal. To make sure that your garbage disposal stays clean and working for many years, let our plumbers here at New Orleans Plumbing tell you what should and should not go down your garbage disposal.

First, let us explain to you what types of foods that are safe for your garbage disposal. Mostly any small piece of food that is soft can go into the garbage disposal. These things include bread, boneless meat, some vegetables, fruit and their skins, small scraps of food, and coffee grounds. These are all things that are soft and very easy to grind up in the disposal. None of these foods will clog or slow down the disposal. The great thing about many foods that can go down the disposal is that they will make the kitchen smell good. If your disposal does start to smell a little a great way to fix this is putting some coffee grounds or citrus fruit with no pit in them down the disposal and grind it up. It will neutralize the smell and usually come out smelling like whatever you put down there.

Also, you will want to remember that when you are using your garbage disposal you should always have cold water running. This water helps flush down the chopped bits of food down the drain of your sink. You will also want to make sure that the water is on the entire time you are using the disposal. You will know the food is completely ground up when the disposal starts to make a slight purring sound.

Now, let us tell you about foods that should not be put down your garbage disposal. All of these foods will cause your garbage disposal to get clogged and unable to work anymore. These foods include stringy vegetables such as celery or corn husks, pits from fruit, bones, grease, and pasta. You will not want to put pits from fruit or bones down the disposal because they are much too hard to be ground up. They may actually break one of the blades on the garbage disposal which means you will have to have it replaced. The other foods we mentioned are all quite starchy. They will actually create a residue on the blades making them not work quite as well as they could. Pasta and grease are the starchiest foods listed. They will end up coating the blades with this starch and they will be too clogged to dispose of anything else.
